The Work:
On February 1, 2003 the Space Shuttle Columbia broke up on re-entry following a 16 day mission orbiting the Earth. All seven of the astronauts on board were lost, and the debris of the shuttle orbiter was spread across a huge area of East Texas and Louisiana.
In February of 2028 we mark the 25th anniversary of this tragedy. This work will memorialize, celebrate, and remember the brave men and women who lost their lives that day.
The composition will be written in two parts: 1. A Fanfare of Remembrance, and 2. The Memorial and Celebration. This is done partly to make the work accessible to advanced high school groups who may not have the capability of performing such a long work otherwise.
There may be options for additional enhancements, such as visual elements, sound elements, and/or electroacoustic elements…although that has not been determined at this time.
